Coram Man Killed in One-Vehicle Crash in Melville

Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a one-car crash that killed an 83-year-old man in Melville last night.

Melville, NY - April 22nd, 2014 - Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a one-car crash that killed an 83-year-old man in Melville last night.

Rafael Ortiz, 57, was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry west on the Long Island Expressway when the vehicle veered off the roadway, striking a pole, east of  Exit 50 in Melville at approximately 7:25 p.m.

Ortiz’s stepfather, Dominic Bottiglieri, 83, of Theodore Drive, Coram, was killed in the crash.  Ortiz, also of Theodore Drive, Coram, was transported by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.
