Garden City, NY - April 14, 2013 - The Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP), a national, research-based, early literacy, parenting, and school readiness program, will feature Dr. Joshua Sparrow of Harvard Medical School and the Brazelton Touchpoints Center as the keynote speaker at its 2014 Annual Conference.  His keynote presentation, “School Readiness and Emotional Development in the Early Years” will open the conference on May 5-6, 2014 at the Long Island Marriott, in Uniondale, NY.  The conference is open to the public and approximately 200 early childhood education professionals, parents, and students are expected to attend.

Dr. Joshua Sparrow is an internationally-known expert on child development, mental health issues in children, and developmental delays.  He has co-authored eight books with Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, which have been translated into more than 20 languages, and has revised the 15th anniversary 2nd edition of Touchpoints: Birth to Three with Dr. Brazelton.  He is also the co-editor of Nurturing Children and Families: Building on the Legacy of T. Berry Brazelton.

Jennifer Astuto, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of the Child & Family Policy Center of New York University; will also present promising findings from two Randomized Control Trials of the Parent-Child Home Program.  The studies suggest that young children who participate in PCHP have better critical school readiness skills than children who do not.

Additionally, conference participants will have the opportunities to participate in various workshops, including: Technology and Early Childhood Learning; Art – A Sensory Experience for Infants and Toddlers; Health and School Readiness; and Biting and Hitting and Dumping. Oh My! Helping Families Understand and Cope with the Challenging Behaviors of Toddlers.

Those interested in attending the conference should contact Michele Morrison (516-883-7840 or mmorrison@parent-child.org) or visit PCHP’s website, www.parent-child.org, to find additional information and conference registration forms.

About PCHP
The Parent-Child Home Program's (PCHP) nationwide network of program sites provides under-resourced families with the necessary tools to ensure their children achieve their greatest potential in school and in life.  Since 1965, PCHP has been assisting underserved communities in replicating and expanding this proven school readiness program that builds early parent-child verbal interaction and learning at home.  Through twice-weekly visits by highly trained community-based early literacy specialists, PCHP provides families the skills, materials (books and educational toys), and support to help parents engage and teach their children.  Almost 50 years of research shows that the Program effectively increases school readiness, decreases the need for special education services before grade 3 by 50%, and increases participants’ high school graduation rates by over 30% - to the same level as their middle-income peers.  www.parent-child.org.
