E-ZPass On-the-Go Sales in Cash Lanes Tops 300,000 At MTA Crossings

New York, NY - April 10th, 2014 - More than 300,000 E-ZPass On-the-Go tags have been sold in cash lanes at MTA’s seven bridges and two tunnels since the program began in June 2011, proving that drivers love the convenience and savings of E-ZPass rather than sitting in long lines, fumbling for cash and change at toll booths.

Sales in cash lanes reached the 300,000 milestone on Thursday, April 3. The tags can be purchased in cash lanes for $30, plus the price of the current trip.

“What we’re noticing is that even occasional users of our bridges and tunnels realize that they can save time and money by purchasing an E-ZPass On-the-Go tag,” said MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Jim Ferrara. “With the discount offered to MTA E-ZPass drivers and the many different ways that we now have for cash customers to take advantage of E-ZPass, motorists realize that E-ZPass is the best value.”

Accounts can be replenished several different ways. The most popular is automatic replenishment with a credit/debit card. Another option is Pay Per Trip where the toll is deducted from a bank account using the ACH system once a trip is taken. Drivers who prefer cash can also refill their accounts at one of three walk-in centers or the MTA Reload Card, which allows drivers to refill accounts with cash at any of the 2,500 Visa ReadyLink locations throughout the region.  The MTA Reload Card is not a credit card; it simply identifies the account for the cash reload.

Of the MTA’s nine crossings, the most tags have been sold in cash lanes at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge with more than 62,000, followed by the Throgs Neck Bridge with more than 56,000, and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge with nearly 50,000.

If linked to a credit or debit card, the On-the-Go tag can be used to pay up to $30 in tolls. There is a $10 tag deposit if it is not linked. Tags must be registered within 48 hours of their first use at www.ezpassny.com or by calling a toll free number at 1-800-333-TOLL (8655). If they are not registered, the tags are deactivated.
