Tangier Smith Elementary Announces Science Expo Winners

Mastic Beach, NY - April 8, 2014 - Students at Tangier Smith Elementary School in the William Floyd School District recently participated in the annual school-wide science expo with winners earning the opportunity to have their projects entered into the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Elementary Science Fair this May. Student work will also be displayed at the William Floyd School District second annual Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Symposium later this spring.

Students in Dr. Amy Meyer’s science research class at William Floyd High School judged the student submissions using the “BNL Judges’ Rubric,” which included the categories of originality, hypothesis, procedures/organization, investigation trials, analysis, evaluation/conclusion and presentation.

Congratulations to the following students who were selected as the overall winners for their grade level:

  • Kindergarten: Jake Bongiovi for his project, “Which liquid will melt faster?” (Wendy Gross’s class)
  • 1st Grade: Serenity Sinclair for her project, “Water Transfer.” (Louisa Markewitz’s class)
  • 2nd Grade: Ashley Ippolito for her project, “Producing Electricity Using Earth’s Natural Resources.” (Rebecca Maler’s class)
  • 3rd Grade: Arianna Rodriguez for her project, “Does Temperature Affect Magnetism?” (Christine DeFelice’s class)
  • 4th Grade: Ariella Morano for her project, “Spoiled Rotten: Living in a Green World.” (Karla Elarde’s class)
  • 5th Grade: Andrew Maiorini for his project, “Melts in Your Mouth.” (Alexis Cioffero’s class)
