Greenport, NY - March 31, 2014 - The ninth annual Peconic Landing May Mile & 5K Race Saturday, May 10, at Peconic Landing, 1500 Brecknock Road, Greenport, again will benefit the Greenport Fire Department. This intergenerational event has become the East End’s premier Older Americans Month celebration and welcomes runners and walkers of all ages and abilities.

Registration and stretching begin at Brecknock Hall, May 10, at 8 a.m. The race and walk start at 10 a.m., followed by the awards ceremonies at 11:15 a.m. and a barbeque afterward. Registration is available at http://www.peconiclanding.com/may-mile-2014/.  Although pre-registration is recommended on the event registration form, race/May Mile registration and barbeque lunch/ceremony-only tickets can be purchased on race day.

For those who cannot be present, donations are also being accepted. The Suffolk Times, Greenport and Southold IGA are sponsoring the event at the Olympic Level of $5,000, and sponsors and raffle  prizes are still being sought.

Presentation of the “Older American Champion Award” to Father Thomas Murray, pastor of Greenport’s St. Agnes Church since 2002, will highlight the day. This award annually honors a Long Island or local individual for his or her years of service and continued dedication to older Americans, acknowledging the difference that person makes in older Americans’ quality of life.

Race day raffle proceeds also benefit Greenport Fire Department. Items include a membership at Eastern Long Island Hospital’s Fitness & Wellness Center and an original watercolor of a vineyard by local artist Diane Alec Smith.

More than $160K has been raised for the Greenport Fire Department since the event’s inception in 2005. Thanks to more than 70 monetary, in-kind and raffle sponsors, more than 500 participants and many volunteers, the 2013 May Mile & 5K alone raised $24,250. Funds helped the Greenport Fire Department purchase, refurbish and maintain vital safety equipment.
