Shirley, NY - March 27, 2015 - On Friday, March 27, hundreds of students from William Floyd Elementary School wore yellow for Seth Lane, a five-year old from Northamptonshire, England, who suffers from Severe Combined Immunodeficiency disease, which means he has a weakened immune system and must be confined to a sterile room for protection from germs and bacteria. Seth’s favorite color is yellow and his parents put out a request earlier in March via YouTube asking people around the world to take photos of themselves or others wearing yellow and to post it to social media with the #WearYellowForSeth on March 27 – the day of his second bone marrow transplant.
Samantha Towle, a fifth-grader in Shari Fanning and Alba Salazar’s class who also serves as co-president of the William Floyd Elementary Student Council, heard about Seth and wanted to show support and compassion for him and his family. So she approached her teachers, her principal Keith Fasciana, and school social worker Jeanne Stern, about requesting that students and staff wear yellow for Seth. "This is a great way for our students to come together and show compassion and provide encouragement to Seth and his family," said Mrs. Stern.
The Lane family plans to pin the locations of participants on a world map in Seth’s room at the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle, England. Samantha and her schoolmates are proud to show their support for Seth and wish him well.
