Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the 2014 Children’s Summer Workshops at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve.

Glen Cove, NY - March 27, 2014 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the 2014 Children’s Summer Workshops at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. The workshops include hands-on activities for children ages 5 – 10 and take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in July and August.

The 2014 workshop themes are:

Nature I: Pond study, exploring the woods, flowers and weeds. (Ages 5-10)

Geology: Rocks and minerals, erosion and fossils, Long Island formations. (Ages 8-10)

Nature II: Beach ecology, beginner’s birding, investigating butterflies and bugs. (Ages 5-10)

Native American: Tools and artifacts, culture, pottery, games and legends, fire and survival. (Ages 5-10)

Each theme is offered at different times during July and August as follows:

July 8th, 9th, and 10th:

    Native American (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    Geology (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

July 15th, 16th, and 17th:

    Nature II (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    Nature I (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

July 22nd, 23rd, and 24th:

    Nature I (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    Nature II (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

July 29th, 30th, and 31st:

    Native American (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    Nature I (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

August 5th, 6th, and 7th:

    Nature II (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)

    Geology (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

August 12th, 13th, and 14th:

    Geology (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    Native American (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

August 19th, 20th, and 21st:

    Nature I (9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    Nature II (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Registration and pre-payment is required. Fee: $100.00 per child per three half-day workshop; fees are non-refundable. Checks should be made payable to: Friends of Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, located at 50 Barry Drive in Glen Cove, is a center for research on Long Island geology and a valued resource in the study of the Island’s Native American archaeology. Reference collections of original archaeological artifacts and geological phenomena are maintained. These are used in exhibits and Museum educational programs and are available for special research purposes. A gift shop provides materials and publications related to the exhibits and educational programming, with emphasis on the natural history of Long Island.
