Mastic Beach, NY -  March 2nd, 2016 - Students in Rebecca Gaddis’s and Christine Chieffo’s fifth-grade classes at John S. Hobart Elementary School recently collaborated on an egg drop project to determine which student-created structure was best suited to protect a raw egg from the impact of a two-story drop.

Working together, the students applied their critical thinking skills and placed eggs in containers made from different material including such items as cotton balls, tissue and toilet paper, balloons, boxes, wire, q-tips and other items.

Students compared the effects of these different materials, shapes, and forces on the strength and stability of their structures and learned that eggs were best protected by the balloons, boxes and toilet paper.

This project focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and according to their teachers, the students had a blast!
