Mother Arrested for Murdering Her Newborn

Press Releases

A Central Islip woman was arrested for murdering her own child.

West Islip, NY - February 20, 2014 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a Central Islip woman for the killing of her newborn earlier this week.

Santos Elena Ruiz Solano gave birth to a girl on February 16 at 3 a.m. at 40 Shoal Drive in West Islip where she was employed as a live-in housekeeper. The baby suffered traumatic injuries shortly after her birth and died at the scene. Ruiz Solano then placed the baby in a plastic bag and left the home.

Complications of child birth forced Ruiz Solano to seek medical care at a nearby hospital. The child was recovered from a nearby garbage can and given to hospital personnel, who called police.

Homicide Squad detectives charged Ruiz Solano, 26, of 375 Clift St, Central Islip, with Murder 2nd Degree. She will be held overnight for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip on February 21.
