Snowfall Totals for Winter Storm Niko, February 9th, 2017

Written by Christian Abbatecola  |  09. February 2017

Long Island hasn’t seen many big snow storms during the school week this winter, but Thursday, February 9th showed that snow days are all but inevitable on the Island. Though there was only an inch or two of accumulation on the ground by the time students would normally start boarding buses early in the morning, most schools had already made the decision to stay closed for the day well before the first flurry started.

The threat of slippery roads and a persistent snowstorm that would have made getting students home in the afternoon rather difficult, even if they made it to school safe and sound in the morning, was all the schools needed to declare a snow day.

In Nassau County, Malverne received over 6 inches of snow, and in Suffolk, Farmingville topped the list with 9.4 inches. Yet if you travel a bit further towards the East End of the Island, totals are a bit less.

Nearby in Manhattan's Central Park, 9.0 inches of snowfall was recorded, in Queens totals of over 13 inches, and in the Bronx, they received totals of over 6 inches of snow so far.
