Mastic Beach, NY - February 6, 2017 - In an effort to equip and prepare students for their future careers and post-secondary education in a globally competitive 21st century environment, the William Floyd School District continues to add new and exciting academic opportunities for students. New academic offerings this school year are Geometry in Construction, Introduction to Computer Science, Robotics, Math/ELA for the College Bound, Technical Writing, College Business Math, Exploration of Crafts and Technical Writing.

These new offerings, in addition to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) academy programs that began four years ago with Automotive Technology, Building Trades & Construction, Cosmetology, Hospitality Services and Medical Assisting, along with the already thriving Business Education Department, give students a variety of options to explore their interests and get a head start on their secondary education or careers. Due to popular demand, an additional section of Medical Assisting was added this year. Medical Assisting is one of the most sought after careers in the healthcare industry.

This school year’s new classes have resulted in additional Technology “pathways for graduation” in Architecture and Engineering, in addition to the Building Trades & Construction pathway, which all lead to a high school diploma with a technical endorsement, as well as the opportunity to earn an advanced Regents diploma.

“The new courses and programs fulfill a vital need,” said Dr. Donna Watkins, Director of Secondary Education and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), William Floyd School District. “Our students are receiving the training to enter college or the workforce prepared which will help them become productive and contributing citizens throughout their lives. “

William Floyd High School has a plethora of offerings for students with all interests including the four-and-a-half year old science research program, thriving and talented fine arts and music departments, science, mathematics, social studies, English, NJROTC and much more. Students also have a number of opportunities to gain college credits through a dual enrollment program and partnerships with St. John’s University, Farmingdale State College and Suffolk County Community College. The high school also offers many challenging honors and advanced placement courses.

For the future, the district is exploring the possibility of adding new opportunities such as Medical Assisting II with two pathways – an IT or Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapy focus, an EMT course, a Law Enforcement CTE Pathway, additional Automotive courses such as motorcycle repair and barbering.
