Nassau County, NY - February 4th, 2014 - Suffolk County Police have arrested two men for committing six armed robberies during the past week after an off-duty Nassau County police officer followed the suspects from the scene of one of the robberies.
An off-duty Nassau County police officer was entering Cool Monkey Desserts, located at 2184 Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook, on February 2 at approximately 8:15 p.m. when he was alerted by employees that two men had just attempted to rob the business. The officer followed the suspects and aided responding Suffolk County police officers in the apprehension of the men.
Following an investigation by Second, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Squad detectives, Thomas Leahey and Joseph Salvia were charged with three counts of Robbery 1st Degree for robberies that occurred at Tropical Smoothie Café, 532 Larkfield Road, Elwood, on February 1; Subway, 530 Route 111, Hauppauge, on January 29; and Beach Bum Tanning, 6168 Jericho Turnpike, Commack, on January 28. They were also charged with three counts of Attempted Robbery for robbery attempts at Cool Monkey Desserts, 2184 Nesconset Highway, Stony Brook, on February 2; Quiznos, 4611 Sunrise Highway, Bohemia, on February 2; and Dunkin Donuts, 560 Nesconset Highway, Smithtown, on February 1.
Leahey, 28, of 461 Michigan Ave., Ronkonkoma, and Salvia, 25, of 10 Long Bow Lane, Commack, were scheduled to be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
