What Commuters Can Expect This Evening as Snowfall Continues

Written by Lyndsay McCabe  |  03. February 2014

The Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow will remain in effect until 7 p.m., which means that commuters will still be met with snow on their way home this evening.  The National Weather Service predicts lighter snow for tonight, but they still advise people to exercise caution into this evening, as many roadways still remain covered in snow.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the low 20s, so drivers will also have to worry about icy road conditions, as well as a drop in visibility to one quarter to one half mile at times. To see the status of the roads near you, take a look at our Long Island Traffic Cameras.

The National Weather Service adds that a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means that travel is especially dangerous, and that travel should be limited to the case of an emergency.  It is advised that drivers who must travel should pack a flashlight, food, and water in their vehicle in case of emergency.

Fortunately for riders on the Long Island Rail Road, the LIRR continues to operate with weather-related delays on only a few branches.

On the other hand, Long Island buses are having much more trouble navigating through the snowy roads. Bus riders in Suffolk County can expect limited service into Port Jefferson Village, Sienna Village, and parts of Ronkonkoma.  Those who use Nassau County NICE Buses will experience major delays as well as possible detours through late Monday evening.

Although the Winter Storm Warning is only in effect until 7 PM this evening, the Hazardous Weather Outlook and Special Weather Statement are still in effect until further notice. Additionally, a new Winter Storm Watch will go into effect on Wednesday morning at 12 AM, and will stay in effect until 6 PM that evening. Although Tuesday looks like it will be mostly clear, the roads may still be icy, and things are sure to get even more slippery out theere on Wednesday, when we'll be getting hit yet again with a wintery mix.

The video below was taken on the Sunken Meadow Parkway around 6PM. Although the roadway appears to be mostly clear, snow is still falling, and drivers should take caution, as there may be icy patches.
