Hempstead Man Arrested for Killing Victim in Botched Mugging

Hempstead, NY - January 30th, 2015 - Third Squad detectives report the details of an arrest for attempted murder and robbery that occurred in Hempstead on Saturday, 01/03/15 at 10:00 P.M.

According to detectives, Bennie Kinard, 23, of Gladys Ave., Hempstead, armed with a handgun, approached a male victim, 25, on Henry St., and demanded money. The defendant forced the victim to hand over his cash and cell phone, and then shot him once in the chest.  The victim was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery, and is now recovering.

Hempstead Police officers located the defendant on Thursday, 01/29/15 on Albermarle Ave., where he was placed under arrest.  Kinard is being charged with Murder 2nd Degree (Attempt), two counts of Robbery 1st Degree, Criminal Use Firearm 1st Degree, Criminal Possession Weapon 2nd Degree, and Criminal Possession Weapon 3rd Degree.  

He will be arraigned on Friday, 01/30/15 in First District Court, Hempstead.
