William Floyd High School Student Athletes Receive Numerous Fall Sports Awards

Mastic Beach, NY - January 30, 2014 For the fall season, William Floyd High School’s student athletes have garnered a number of athletic and academic awards in various varsity sports including football, boys soccer, girls field hockey, girls gymnastics, girls cross country and girls volleyball. The student athletes were recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting.

“We are extremely proud of all our student athletes and would like to congratulate those who have distinguished themselves with these honors,” said Mark Mensch, Athletic Director, William Floyd School District. “The recognition of division, league, county, conference, state and scholar athletes is a testament to the hard work and dedication that these students put forth every day.”

Coach Paul Longo’s perennial powerhouse Colonials, a team that finished the season as Big Four Champions and Suffolk County finalists, led the way with nine awards and a team sportsmanship award. Jawan Jenkins (senior) was named All-Division, All-County and 2nd Team All-State; Dashawn Morton (senior), the recipient of the Collotta Award given to the “Best Linebacker” in Suffolk County by the Suffolk County Coaches Association, was named All-Division, All-County and 3rd Team All-State. Additional awards include: Chris Faison (senior), All-County; and All-Division athletes Michael Alparslan (senior), Dylan Cotter (senior), Brian Iannone (senior), Billy Kaastra (senior), Steven Rendino (senior) and Chris Winters (senior).

Boys soccer led by coach Paul Paniccia received the team sportsmanship award and had three players honored: Jerry Papile (senior) received the All-Academic award; Michael Germer (junior) was named All-League and All-Conference; and Javier Reyes (junior) was named All-League.

Also having three players receive honors was the field hockey team led by coach Paula Malguarnera. Seniors Rachel Thomas and Monica Umanzor, as well as sophomore Caitlyn Weldon were named All-Division.

Girls gymnastics team members coached by Gia Vanacore had two award recipients: Melanie Bernocco (senior) was named an All-County Scholar Athlete; and Christina Brockhoff (junior) received All-League honors.

Additional awards include Kayla Clements (senior) receiving All-Division honors for girls cross country (coached by Jillian Sanders); and Ashley McCormack (senior), was named All-League for girls volleyball (coached by Jennifer Tufano).
