The Winter Storm Warning has been cancelled. * Locations...Putnam...Fairfield and Nassau counties. * Hazard types...accumulating snow. * Accumulations...total snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches. * Winds...north 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. * Temperatures...25-30. * Visibilities...one quarter to one half mile at times. * Timing...snow continues this afternoon...tapering off late this afternoon. * Impacts...hazardous travel conditions due to snow covered roads. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities...and use caution while driving. , "Coastal Flood Advisory" ...Coastal Flood Warning in effect until 1 PM EST this afternoon... ...Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect from 10 PM this evening to 1 am EST Tuesday... The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a coastal Flood Warning...which is in effect until 1 PM EST this afternoon. The coastal Flood Advisory is no longer in effect. * Locations...coastal locations along the North Shore of Nassau and northwestern Suffolk. * Tidal departures...2 1/2 to 3 1/2 feet above astronomical tides. * Timing...moderate coastal flooding expected for this morning high tide cycles...and minor for tonight. * Coastal flood impacts...widespread flooding of vulnerable shore roads and/or properties due to height of storm tide and/or wave action this morning. Mangano Announces “Winter Trek” Nature Walk At The Muttontown Preserve

Muttontown, NY - January 27, 2014 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that the Muttontown Preserve will present a guided Nature Walk entitled, “Winter Trek,” on Sunday, February 9th from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
 
Approximately three miles long, the “Winter Trek” tour will focus on a variety of environments in the preserve, including wetlands, wooded trails, and open fields. The tour guide will also discuss the various plants and animals located throughout the preserve.
 
Comprising 550 acres of fields, woodlands, ponds and estate grounds, Muttontown is Nassau County’s largest nature preserve and one of the most beautiful settings on Long Island. The preserve includes miles of marked nature trails with local wildflowers, trees, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Muttontown also has several structures, including the renovated Chelsea Mansion, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
 
The walk is $5.00 and begins at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required. Muttontown Preserve is located on Muttontown Lane, south of 25A, in East Norwich. For more information please call: (516) 571-8500.
