Written by Long Island News & PR  |  15. January 2014

Southold, NY - January 15th, 2014 - DEC and the Town of Southold are operating a conditional shellfish harvesting program in Mattituck Creek, in the Town of Southold. This program will operate from January 15, 2014 through April 15, 2014, both dates inclusive.

During a conditional harvesting program, shellfish harvesters are allowed to take shellfish from areas that are usually uncertified (closed) for shellfish harvest. Very specific environmental conditions have been identified under which the water quantity in these areas predictably improves and meets the criteria for a certified (open) shellfish harvesting area. Rainfall amounts is the environmental condition used to conduct most conditional shellfish harvesting programs in New York.

Details for the Mattituck Conditional Harvest Program are available on the DEC web site. Non-residents of the Town of Southold should contact the town before harvesting shellfish from shellfish areas within town waters.
