Hempstead Man Arrested for Freeport Robbery, Assault

Freeport, NY - January 14th, 2014 - First Squad detectives report the arrest of a Hempstead man for an incident that occurred on April 10, 2013 at 11:29 am in Freeport.

According to detectives, on 4/10/2013, Abram Owens, 32, of 54 Maple Street, along with another male yet to be arrested, forcibly entered a Rutland Road residence and were confronted by a 21 year old female victim and her 22 year old female friend. Owens, who was armed with a silver revolver, struck the 21 year old victim with his gun on her nose which caused his weapon to fire striking her in the leg. Owens’s accomplice, who stated “You’re not supposed to shoot her”, then fled the scene. Owens, who forced both women upstairs at gunpoint, took the victim’s house phone as well as a cell phone and then fled the scene.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where she received treatment for her injuries.

Owens, who was advised by a friend of a Crime Stoppers flyer he had scene online regarding the incident, surrendered himself to First Squad detectives on 01/13/2014.

The defendant is charged with three (3) counts of Robbery 1st Degree, Assault 1st Degree, two (2) counts of Burglary 1st Degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm 1st Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Violation of Probation and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 01/14/2014.
