Suffolk County Community College's Gallery West Presents: Social Fabric/Moral Fiber

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  09. January 2017

Brentwood, NY - January 6, 2017 - The first exhibition of the spring semester at the Suffolk County Community College Michael J. Grant Campus’ Gallery West, Social Fabric/Moral Fiber, investigates the relationship between textile practices and the human condition. The exhibition will be held from February 14 – March 30, 2017, with an opening reception on February 16.

The show's artists have taken everyday objects and conditions and re-configured them as contemporary indications of our humanity. The very act of using the hand implies an intimate temporal and physical relationship with creation. Whether in the acknowledgment of familial ties, or the understanding of the personal or cultural ties to where we are, the core of our identity is never far from home.

The repetitive act of embroidery, sewing or beading can create moments of reverie where one’s identity and sense of place can be re-imagined in vivid and exciting ways. The exhibiting artists utilize themes derived from domesticity, ideas of homeland and culture with textile-based techniques to create forms of protest. The unique blend of embroidery, paint, beads, and knots alongside revisions of domestic objects unsettle the viewer forcing them to see line, texture and subject matter as a vivid and multi-dimensional engagement.
