THE LAUREL HILL SCHOOL'S early childhood programs (6 weeks – 5 years) are the first stepping-stones on the path to a Laurel Hill education.  Consistent with the school’s four decades of providing top-quality, child-centered education, the early childhood programs offer a safe and vibrant space in which your child will flourish.

INFANT PROGRAM – Ages 6 weeks – 24 months
With the support of loving caregivers, infants begin the lifelong process of exploration and learning. We allow the child’s natural rhythms and temperament to determine his or her daily schedule. Infants are fed, changed and napped on demand.  Their naturally occurring personality traits are respected and accommodated so that the fullness of the program is experienced.

CURRICULUM
The Laurel Hill infant curriculum is bursting with sound, color, and texture, intended to catch and hold babies’ attention and keep them smiling as they learn!  Our language-rich curriculum maximizes sensory stimulation and consistently offers brand-new exciting experiences. There are seven Activity Centers in the classrooms:  Music & Movement, Language Development, Creative Arts & Exploration, Gross Motor Play, Fine Motor & Self-Help Skills Building, Storytelling, Quiet Center.

CAREGIVERS
Our nurturing caregivers are selected for their loving kindness and passion for infant care.  The staff to child ratio of 3 to 1 is unusually high, and allows for the exceptional care your baby deserves.

HYGIENE & SECURITY
We maintain the highest standards in hygiene and security.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM – Ages 2-5 years
Preschoolers live in a magic time!  The Laurel Hill School’s Toddler and Preschool Programs are filled with opportunities for discovery and exploration.  Using a fully individualized and experiential approach, children are exposed to the basic social and academic concepts that they will need for advanced instruction in kindergarten and beyond.  The program is based on kindergarten-level skills in reading and mathematics as well as science and social studies.

CURRICULUM

LEARNING TO READ
Literacy. LHS employs a phonics approach to reading. This encourages children to use their auditory and visual skills to learn to identify individual letters and sounds.
Instructional strategies. Our experiential instructional strategy includes puppetry, music and games to introduce children to letters and sounds.

MATHEMATICS
Exposure to concepts. With the use of manipulatives and games, children are taught number concepts (more than, less than), sorting and classifying, and pattern building, as well as number sequencing, telling time, coin identification, and numerical value identification.

SCIENCE
Discovery-oriented science program.  Each month, teachers create in-class experiments and field experiences to help children absorb topics such as the four seasons, the five senses, water, light, air, and much more.

SOCIAL STUDIES
The world comes into the classroom during social studies!  New themes introduced every two weeks span historical topics, holidays such as Earth Day and Thanksgiving, social issues such as fire safety, and political topics such as Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights movement, the White House, and elections.

Notable components of the Preschool program include:
  • Small class size
