Welcome to a New Year on Long Island! 2016 is expected to be a fun-filled year packed with exciting new opportunities.  Though January brings about short days with chilly temperatures, there are plenty of indoor events to keep you and your family warm and entertained.  Many holiday-themed winter fairs and festivals will be carried over into the first few days of January so that kids can see them before school starts back up.  Fun-seekers can still get in a last-minute trip to the great winter festivals like the Jones Beach Holiday Light Show and Bayville Winter Wonderland, which will both still be open for the first few days of January.   If you’re looking for something fun for the kids to do indoors, @Play Amusements is hosting special winter break hours for children of all ages to enjoy laser tag, arcade games, and even an indoor rollercoaster.

Long Island’s music scene is bustling in January, so Instead of being cooped up inside, head out for a special night with friends or a loved one and support local musicians.  Our area has a rich musical culture, and just as it is good to shop locally, it also benefits your area when you support local musicians.  East End native and rocker Nancy Atlas will be performing every Saturday this month for her Fireside Sessions at the Bay Street Theater, which is sure to be a hit.  Numerous libraries are also hosting musical groups that will put on free performances for families, which is a great opportunity to try out a new genre of music and check out an artist you may not know about.

For those who are planning a wedding, January is also a big month for winter wedding expos.  Several of the big-name country clubs and hotels will be open for couples to explore, including more traditional venues like Wind Watch Golf and Country Club, and more unusual and unique venues, like the Suffolk Theater.  Whatever you are looking for, these expos are a great place to start, and from there, be sure to explore LongIsland.com’s Wedding Guide.

Here are the top events for you and your family to explore in January - bundle up, stay warm, and enjoy!

More Winter Weather Fun for January:

Scope Out the Best Sledding Spots
Everyone has their favorite spot to go sledding, but this month try changing it up and explore one of the parks known for great hills and open areas for sledding such as Belmont Lake State Park or Heckscher State Park, or popular yet unofficial sledding spots like The Pits at Malverne High School. Be sure to exercise caution wherever you choose to sled.

Check Off Your Winter Bucket List
Though the holidays are over, there is still plenty of fun to have - just check out our Winter Bucket List for 2015-2016!  We have lots of indoor and outdoor activities for kids and adults throughout the entire winter like experimenting with new hot cocoa recipes!

Explore an Indoor Play Place
Beat the cold by heading out to an indoor play place where your kids can let out some energy by playing games, hopping on trampolines, and climbing through tunnels.  Most indoor play places have extended hours for school breaks, including winter break and Martin Luther King Day.

Let Them Eat Snow!
If you're looking for something different and exciting to do with kids, look no further than our snow recipes!  Kids can make homemade snow cones, vanilla ice cream, and even maple syrup candy from freshy fallen snow right in your own backyard.
