Attorney Matthew J. Barnes, one of the founding members of the boutique commercial litigation law firm Barnes & Barnes, P.C. in Melville, New York, has been named to the "40 Under 40" list by Long Island Business News. He will be recognized at the upcoming "40 Under 40" Awards, which will take place January 26, 2012 from 6-10 p.m. at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Earlier this year, Mr. Barnes was selected for inclusion on the 2011 Super Lawyers Rising Stars list in the area of Construction Law. No more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in New York State are named to the list.

Since 1998, Long Island Business News has accepted nominations for outstanding members of the business community on Long Island who are under the age of 40. These future leaders of Long Island have already begun to distinguish themselves in business, government, education and the not-for-profit sector. They have a proven track record if career success, are involved in mentoring and promoting their profession and find time to give back to their communities.

Mr. Barnes represents small, mid-sized and large national organizations in his clients' construction and business litigation claims, and corresponding transactions, involving commercial real estate developers and construction firms. In addition, he frequently litigates business dissolutions, partnership disputes, complex labor law, lien law, breach of contract and related claims in the construction industry, including but not limited to claims involving non-payment, extra work, acceleration or delay, and surety rights.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Barnes worked as a tax lawyer in the Mergers and Acquisitions group of a preeminent global accounting/financial services firm in New York. His extensive background in public accounting, coupled with his experience as a tax lawyer, allowed him to assist his clients in the process of litigating business dissolutions, partnership disputes, fraud and business torts, and constructive trust claims.

He is a graduate of the Hofstra University School of Law, where he was the recipient of the Excellence in Commercial Law Award. He is licensed to practice in New York and is admitted to the United States District Courts for the Southern District and the Eastern District of New York.

He is also a member of the prestigious Alexander Hamilton American Inn of Court, an organization comprised of select judges, attorneys, law professors and law students whose main objective is establishing a society of legal professionals who work together to promote excellence in all fields of law.

Mr. Barnes is a member of the Nassau and Suffolk County Bar Associations and the New York State Bar Association. He is also a member of the Subcontractors Trade Association and serves on the advisory committee of the New York/Long Island chapter of the American Fence Association. In addition, he is an active member of the Chaminade Lawyers Alumni Association.

"I would like to thank Long Island Business News for naming me to this prestigious list," Mr. Barnes said. "It is an honor to be recognized for both my professional accomplishments and my involvement in the community. I am proud to share the stage and join this group of prominent members of the Long Island business community."
