Some say that fall is the best time of the year to watch the sunset. And with the amazing foliage and waterfront views we have on Long Island, it’s pretty hard to disagree!

Although we don’t always get to see the sun go down directly on the water (there are some spots where you can, however) we still have the chance to see some amazing sunsets. As the days grow shorter you will have to get to these spots earlier. The sun will set today at 6:11, so be sure to get to these spots about 20 minutes beforehand, and don’t forget your camera.

Montauk
The Montauk lighthouse is one of the most well-known landmarks on Long Island. Even if you don’t make it within view of the lighthouse during the sunset, visit any one of the beaches here and you will most definitely catch a great view, and maybe even see some surfers.

Long Beach
Waves crashing against the jetties lining the shore makes Long Beach a great destination to watch the sunset. The perfect way to end a day on the boardwalk.

Bayville
Here you have the chance to see the sun set on the water. The south side of Bayville looks out across Oyster Bay and Centre Island, making this possibly the best place on the North Shore to see a sunset.

Orient Point
Another great chance to watch the sunset against a lighthouse view is at Orient Point. It may be a bit out of the way for most of us, but definitely worth the trip.

Fire Island
It’s hard to leave out Fire Island when talking about any great waterfront view. If you’re lucky enough to have a boat, be sure to head out here for some great sunset photos.

Of course, there are plenty of other great spots to check out the sunset. Be sure to see our sunset photo gallery, as well as out fall photo gallery for more great spots.
