Harvesting your sunflowers
5 easy steps to a great snack

STEP 1:
Look for heads that are wilted and have begun to dry out. Remember, not all of your sunflowers will be ready to harvest at the same time.

STEP 2:
Using a pair of sharp garden shears cut the head and the first 2 inches of the stem off.

STEP3:
Remove all of the dead petals and place each head in a brown paper bag. You may be able to fit two in each bag if they are small.

STEP 4:
Close the bag loosely and store in a cool, dry place, such as a cabinet in your kitchen. DO NOT make the mistake of keeping them in your garage. I did that a few years ago and lost all of my seeds to bugs!

STEP 5:
One the heads are dry, poke each seed out using your fingers or a spoon. It may take more than two weeks for the heads to be completely dry.

Voila! You have created your own tasty snack!
