Where To Go Pick Out Plump Pumpkins This Fall on Long Island

Written by Kelly Tenny  |  01. October 2016

Usher in the fall season here on Long Island by making a trip out to one of the many pumpkin patches on Long Island! This traditional seasonal activities is a must-do for any fall bucket list, no matter your age! Everyone can find something enjoyable about finding that perfect pumpkin to bring home to carve up into a Jack-o'-lantern, bake into a pie, or simply set out on display on a porch stoop.

Before you go out to pick some pumpkins of your own, check out these pumpkin picking tips!

  • If you’re planning on picking pumpkins to use in seasonal recipes, stick with smaller pumpkins, also known as sugar pumpkins. These pumpkins are sweeter making them perfect for baking in a pie, loaf of bread, muffins, you name it!
  • Don’t choose a pumpkin that has soft spots, bruises, cuts or large discolorations. These could all be signs that the pumpkin isn’t going to last very long.
  • Go for a pumpkin that is firm on the outside with a sturdy, intact stem. These are signs of a healthy pumpkin.
  • Rounder pumpkins with an oval shape to them are better for carving up a Jack o Lantern because they have more cavity space and a larger canvas to bring character to.
  • Steer clear of pumpkins with signs of frostbite. If the top of the pumpkin has a duller color it may have frostbite which can lessen the life of the pumpkin.
  • If you’re going to be placing your pumpkins on the porch for all to see and admire, make sure to get one with a flat bottom so that it doesn’t fall over/down the porch steps.
