As we enter into September, we head into the fruit picking time of year. We live in the “Great Apple” and many Long Islanders love to apple pick. Generally, we will start to head up-state for our apple picking, but there are plenty of apple orchards on Long Island.
 
When you get to the apple orchard and begin picking out apples, there is much to consider while picking. If you are eating them right away, you will look for ripe apples with no discoloration. If you are going to bake, you need to look for overripe apples. When you squeeze the apple and the area turns brown, then it is overripe. Also, the rounder apples are younger; these apples will have more flavor to them. They are not recommended to use for baking because they are too firm and can become bitter tasting.
 
Apple picking stretches from the beginning of September to late October, so you have plenty of time to check out the different apple orchards. Baking apple pies, making apple cider, or any other apple filled recipe is the epitome of autumn activities.
