Pete Schlusser, Member, Suffolk County Long Island Power Authority Oversight Committee
Steve Flanagan, Founder and Executive Director, Conservative Society for Action
Local elected officials

What: Members of LIPA LIES (Long Island Energy Surveillance), the Suffolk County Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Oversight Committee and the Conservative Society for Action will join local ratepayers, experts and elected officials to discuss the best energy options for Long Islanders, develop a strategy to protect ratepayers and possibly create an energy provider that could reduce energy rates between 20%-40%.

Within months, LIPA will choose one of three options: go private, which means ratepayers will be saddled with $9 billion of LIPA debt; stay with National Grid, which continues to overcharge Long Islanders; or become a fully operational energy municipality.

LIPA LIES is urging local elected officials to provide Long Islanders the protection they need against ever-increasing energy rates. The organization has pointed out LIPA's inefficiencies, such as its refusal to use the LIPA Edge program this summer - which would have reduced energy usage during peak hours and saved ratepayers $33 million -and LIPA's recent admission that it overcharged its ratepayers by $231 million.

When: Tuesday, August 16, 2011
7-11 p.m.

Where: Melville Marriott
1350 Walt Whitman Road, Melville, NY

Directions: LIE to Exit 49 North. Take service road toward Huntington for 1.2 miles. Turn right onto Old Walt Whitman Rd./Walt Whitman Rd. Hotel will be on your right-hand side.

Photo Ops: Mr. Gorman, Mr. Like, Mr. Schlusser and Mr. Flanagan addressing the audience and being joined by local elected officials.

About LIPA LIES
LIPA LIES (Long Island Energy Surveillance) is a group of civic activists with no political affiliations. The goal is to encourage elected officials to provide the protection ratepayers need. LIPA LIES believes that LIPA's politically-appointed board members abuse the public trust and have no regard whatsoever for the ratepayers. The mission is to replace the existing LIPA board with officials elected by the ratepayers with the purpose of listening to the ratepayers.
