With the job market the way it is today, it seems like a crazy idea to ask for a raise, bonus, or promotion. Or, is it?

Now may be the best time, because you will probably be the only one asking. Think about it this way, you are working very hard. Probably harder than you ever have in your entire life. You have made sacrifices you haven't made before. You have seen things you wish you hadn't. And, for all of your troubles? You deserve to be recognized for your hard work and effort.

The best way to get what you want is to ask for it. But first, you will have to stop telling yourself that you are asking for the impossible. Second, you will have to put a plan in place to make it happen.

So, How Do You Get The Promotion You Want? Here's How:

1. Acknowledge The Progress You Have Made

You've worked hard on your career for many years. Yes, you may have told yourself that you were just doing it for the money, but there had to be something more that kept you moving in the direction you took. Be proud that you bring quality work to your company everyday. Not everyone can say the same thing.

2. Stop Waiting For A Promotion To Be Handed To You

What do you need to do to get a promotion? (and a raise!) Do you need to update your skills? Get more training? Learn what some of the other departments are doing? Initiative and pro-activeness, not blame, will be the catalyst to your rise to the next level.

3. Decide What You Want

Do you want to stay where you are or move to a different area? Do you want to implement an idea you have or an idea that belongs to the president of the company? Decide what you want, and get it on paper. This will be your roadmap for implementation.

4. Find Your Promotion

What areas in your company have openings? And, if there are no openings,
what openings will your create? What problems can you solve? What are you
the person to solve them? Act as if people in your organization want what
you can offer. Let your passion show through. Immerse yourself in the excitement. Watch as what you want begins to happen.

5. Rally For Support

You will not be able to advance to the next level unless people are willing to support you. Who in your company do you admire? Get to know that person further. Can you offer a suggestion or guidance on how they can tackle a project they have on their agenda? Be known as someone with answers. Create a reputation for knowing how to get things done, and people will want to help you.

6. Set A Date

When will you have your promotion? Many factors will determine when your
promotion actually happens, but giving yourself a specific date produces something to shoot for. You say when you will reach your goal, and you put the actions in place to make it happen. It's powerful stuff, but only if you use it.

7. Work With A Coach

Coaching is one of the best investments you can make in your career because you are working with someone who is objective, stands by your side, and wants to see you win. No judgments are made, and no excuses are accepted. It's the ultimate in support and accountability.

So what you do you say? You only have one life to live so it might as well
be a life you love!
