Hempstead Man Arrested for Stealing Firearm from 2016 Crime Scene, Officials Report

Hempstead, NY - July 19, 2017 - The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of a Hempstead man for Criminal Possession of a Weapon that occurred on December 14, 2016 in Hempstead.
 
According to Gang Investigation Squad detectives, an unknown subject (not yet arrested) shot a 32 year old male victim on Peninsula Blvd., Hempstead and stole two chains from the victim’s neck. An altercation then ensued between the subject and the victim where the subject dropped the .40 caliber handgun and fled the scene.  
 
Defendant Taiquan Cullum, 27, saw the incident, picked up the handgun, placed it inside his vehicle and fled the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment for his non-life threatening injury.  
 
After an investigation with the assistance of Nassau County Police Department Fugitive Squad, US Marshall Task Force and the Hempstead Police Department Gang Unit, located the defendant and placed him under arrest at his home on July 19, 2017. The handgun was not recovered.
 
Defendant Cullum is being charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Firearm and Tampering with Physical Evidence.  He will be arraigned on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at First District Court, Hempstead.
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
