"The door to more than 10,000 years of history" This fairly new museum (2001) is situated on Montauk Highway and Westgate Road in Southampton and is really interesting and impressive. It is the only Native American owned and operated museum on Long Island. The permanent exhibition, "A Walk with the People" features murals depicting the powerful journey of the Shinnecock people from Paleolithic times to the present. Also on display is a very moving and beautiful series of bronze sculptures of Native American figures. This collection of 20 bronzes, called "My Spirit Dances Forever" are the works of Frederick DeMatteis, who captures feelings, movement, and spirit in beautiful artworks. In the same gallery are wonderful photos of Native Americans. The beautiful log cabin that houses the museum is referred to as a 'healing lodge' because of the specific wood used in construction. The Center offers tours and programs and has been visited by thousands of school children. There are adult programs and special events, workshops and festivals. This is a great spot to take children to learn about Long Island's Native Americans. Hours are Friday and Saturday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday from Noon to 4:00 pm. Groups may call for appointments and information at 631-287-1923.
The 58th Shinnecock Indian Powwow is scheduled for September 3 through 6, rain or shine at the Indian Reservation. Featured will be demonstrations, performances, Native arts and crafts, and, of course, food. For the Powwow, call 631-283-6143
