School’s out and keeping kids busy during the summer can be costly, but with this week’s Local Steals & Deals, it features ways to keep the little ones entertained without emptying your wallet entirely.

Find everything from books, bowling, to free admission to museums!

  • Earn a Free Books: As part of Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program, when your child reads 8 books and records them in the Reading Journal to take to your local B&N store, a free book is earned. The completed journal may be brought in until Sept. 3 to earn a free book listed on the back of the Reading Journal. Reading is a great way to help kids learn new things and build vocabulary. You may also check out LongIsland.com’s very own 2013 Summer Reading Series for reading recommendations for all ages!

  • Free Bowling: Register your kid to receive (2) free games of bowling every day all summer long. Bowling centers, schools, and other community organizations around the country are working together with the Kids Bowl Free Program. There are several Long island locations participating in the program, including East Islip Lanes, Larkfield Lanes, San-Dee Lanes, Massapequa Bowl, Bowl Long Island at Patchogue, Port Jeff Bowl and others. Preregister and bring your printed pass to your designated location.

  • Museum on Us: If you are a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch card holder, take advantage of its Museum on Us program where there is free general admission to select museums the first full weekend of every month. All you need to do is show your photo ID and Bank of America or Merrill Lynch card to the participating museum. Museums on Long Island participating in this program include Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, Long Island Children’s Museum, Old Westbury Gardens and Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages. Mark your calendar for the next opportunity to take advantage of this program – July 6 and 7.
