The beginning of summer 2012 has already reached record high temperatures of over 90 degrees. It is extremely important to watch out for heat advisories and to keep cool in hazardous temperatures like this. However, when then the heat advisories are not in effect, it is a good idea to get out of the air conditioned house and have some summer fun! There are plenty of activities on Long Island that will allow you to enjoy the summer both indoors and outdoors while avoiding the scorching heat at the same time. Here are some ideas that can help get your summer off to a great start:

1. Beaches
The beach is a great place to get family, friends, and kids together. However, if you want to avoid the sun during its hottest hours, it is best to go in the early morning or late afternoon. Large beach umbrellas are also a great way to find some shade. If the sand is too hot for your toes to handle and a game of beach volleyball just seems too painful- you may want to bring along a deck of cards or some board games to play in the shade.

2. Public Pools
Diving into a pool of cool water is a fun and refreshing way to avoid wilting in the sun. Don’t have your own backyard pool? No need to worry, Long Island has an abundance of public pools where you can go and make a splash! Public pools are especially great environments for kids to socialize, take swimming lessons, and get some energy out.  Make sure to check with your local community’s pool to see what classes they offer for the summer.

3. Ice Cream Parlors
You hear the music of the ice cream truck coming down your block, but by the time you get outside you realize the truck is too far gone. Well, when this happens it is good to know where the next closest place is to get that delicious, cold ice cream you’ve been craving. There are plenty of local parlors to find an italian ice, soft-served ice cream cone, or triple chocolate sundae. An ice cream shop is also the perfect spot to relax and cool off if you are out on a bike ride or jog.

4. Amusement Parks
Want to go bumper boating on the water or zip down a waterslide? There are several amusement and water parks on Long Island that have plenty of rides that will help you stay cool in the summer heat. At an affordable price, the whole family or group of friends can enjoy a day of thrilling rides, food, and entertainment. Keep an eye out for coupons on the parks’ websites as well!

5. Zoos and Nature Centers
Summer is a great season to experience wildlife and nature. There are many parks and centers on the Island  that offer some shade under the trees and an opportunity to learn about the environment and different animal species. Some of these centers even host camp programs for people of all ages to get an interactive experience with nature. If you are an animal or nature lover this is definitely an activity you’ll enjoy.
