Long Island was once covered almost entirely in wooded area and farmland. It wasn’t until the 1920s and 1930s that Long Island began to transition into a suburban area. Though the acreage of Long Island farmland has dwindled that doesn’t mean farming has becoming a long lost industry on the Island. The Eastern End of Long Island is brimming with farms while Suffolk and Nassau County have sporadically placed farm stands for residents to enjoy. Produce shoppers will find the Island’s freshest fruits and vegetables plus jams and spreads, baked goods, honey, pies, and a selection of flowers and plants. Some even have “U-Pick” fields where visitors can hand-pick their own apples, peaches, pumpkins and other produce right off the tree or vine it grows from, making it a fun activity for the whole family. When you visit the following farm stands, not only will you rest easy knowing you’ve purchased the freshest produce available but you’ll also have done the right thing in supporting local growers and Long Island business.
