Wednesday's Top 10: Tree-Mendous Ways to Celebrate Arbor Day

Written by Debbi Spiegel  |  24. April 2013

Arbor Day arrives this year on April 26th.   Arbor Day highlights trees. It is a day to honor, care for, and appreciate the trees in our lives. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872 and an estimated one million trees were planted that day. Many countries now observe the holiday. Though usually observed in the spring, the date varies, depending on climate and suitable planting season.

Dr. Seuss'  popular book "The Lorax" said it best.  "I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees."  This year there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and learn about trees while having a lot of fun. From tree scavenger hunts to pulling the invasive garlic mustard plants.

For the homeowner, Arbor Day is an excellent opportunity to take stock of the trees on your property and plan for the future. Inspect your trees. Note any broken branches or evidence of disease or insect infestation. Think about how planting new trees might improve the look of your property or provide wind or heat protection.

Did you know that New York's state tree is the Sugar Maple?
