Written by seniors  |  02. March 2007

To help meet the growing demand of older New Yorkers and Long Islanders who want to remain in their own homes and stay as self-sufficient as possible, Seniors Helping Seniors In-Home Services (SHS) has granted a master license to establish franchise partners throughout several New York boroughs and Long Island. Seniors Helping Seniors started in 1998 with a simple concept that seniors can help each other age better and that those who give and those who receive equally benefit. As an innovative, intra-generational companion services that functions exclusively with and for seniors, we provide:
  • An experienced and credible resource of help for older adults who want to stay in their own homes
  • Full-range of home care, companion and home maintenance support services from seniors who enjoy helping
  • Reasonable hourly rates for seniors who want services and reasonable hourly wages to seniors who provide them
The master license was granted to Reema Nirola, Farmingdale, N.Y., and is supported by Katherine Munnelly, Kings Park, N.Y. They will cover Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Westchester counties. Seniors Helping Seniors is a national caregiver organization that matches seniors who need in-home care services with seniors who provide them. "We were immediately drawn to the possibilities of a Seniors Helping Seniors franchise when we first heard about it. Both Katherine and I not only felt that this was a wonderful opportunity for us to apply our experience and support our strong feelings about helping older Americans to remain independent and in their own homes," said Nirola. Munnelly said, "Seniors Helping Seniors is different from other caregiver organizations because it matches seniors who need help with seniors who provide services such as household assistance, companion care or 24-hour care. Our mission is to provide seniors with the ability to choose an independent lifestyle in their own homes for as long as possible with the dignity and respect they deserve by finding caring seniors to help each other." Philip Yocom, and his wife, Kiran Yocom, co-founded Seniors Helping Seniors In-Home Services (SHS), which began as a non-profit organization serving Reading and Berks County, Pennsylvania. That first non-profit organization today encompasses more than 250 senior providers helping more than 600 senior receivers. In 2006, Seniors Helping Seniors provided nearly 13,000 hours of service. Philip says, "We believe we have found a practical, cost-effective way to help seniors remain independent and to continue contributing."
