Groundhog Day: Find Out If Winter Will Be Ending Soon

Written by Sharon Lindell  |  29. January 2014

With the chilly weather and the snow we have had had these past few weeks, we can confidently say that Long Island is ready for spring! A glimmer of hope will be this Sunday, February 2nd. In addition to being Super Bowl Sunday, it is also Groundhog Day.

Groundhog Day is derived from folklore about a groundhog which will emerge on February 2nd. If the groundhog sees its shadow, there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see its shadow, spring will come early.

There are many groundhogs you can see in our area and many events going on in celebration of Groundhog Day! To visit  Staten Island Chuck, Holtsville Hal, or Malverne Mel. Check them out and cross your fingers for good news!

If you can't make it to one of the local Groundhog Day events, not to worry - you can always watch Punxsutawney Phil, one of the country's most well-known Groundhogs, on Sunday morning. Visit his website to find out more!

Do you think Chuck, Mel, and Hal will see their shadows? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
