What are Alpha Hydroxy-Acid (Glycolic-Acid) Peels

Alpha Hydroxy-Acids (AHAs) are a group of naturally occurring-acids which are derived from certain plants and fruits. The most commonly used form of AHA is glycolic-acid, which comes from the sugar cane. It is the only AHA which is able to penetrate through the cell walls by virtue of its small molecular size. Once inside the cell, it will trigger new formation of collagen and turn on the synthesis of dermal glycosaminoglycans to plump up the cell and the ground substances in the skin to reduce wrinkles on the skins surface. Their use amongst dermatologist and plastic surgeons is well known and on the rise.

Recent studies have demonstrated that AHA products can be used in specific skin care programs to combat:
Acne
White-heads
Blackheads
Pustules
Bumps
Psoriasis
Eczema
Dry skin
Age spots
Seborrheic keratosis
Pre-cancerous growths
Hyperkeratosis
Actinic keratosis

AHAs work by stimulating new growth of skin and collagen by decreasing the bond that holds dead skin cells on the surface. This allows dead cells to be removed gradually, leaving behind a layer of smoother and softer skin. AHAs also help to unclog pores and thus decreasing the tendency for acne to develop! During an AHA peel, a solution of glycolic-acid is applied to your skin for a brief period of time, and then washed away. This solution causes several of the top skin layers to dry up and peel off gradually over a period of several days. When the older layers have peeled off, they expose a new layer of undamaged skin!
