Family & Parenting, Top Ten on Long Island, Health & Wellness, Seasonal & Current Events

As we come back from winter break, more people are coming into work and school with colds and the flu. Check out way to prevent ...

With the temperature dropping, it seems more and more that people on Long Island are becoming more prone to illness. Sadly, as long as we go on with our daily activities, we are going to interact with people who are sick.

The CDC offers a lot of information about flu prevention and many of the rules for flu prevention goes along with catching a cold. Don't forget other illness like strep are still going around as well.

So, be mindful of the symptoms of illness and follow some rules if you think you are becoming ill:

  • Get Your Flu Shot: It isn't too late for your flu shot. There are many local pharmacies that still have flu shots available.
  • Sick? Stay Home: If you are sick, stay home from work or school. By going to work sick, you will get your coworkers sick and spread illness.
  • Consult Your Doctor: If you might have the flu, you might have a temperature that will not go down. A doctor's visit will be necessary because some untreated cases of the flu can lead to pneumonia or be lethal.
  • Keep Hydrated: When you are ill, you need as much fluids in you as possible.
  • Remember to Eat: Although sleep and rest helps with a cold or flu, you still need to get nutrients in your body. Consider soup if you have a hard time keeping regular food down.
  • Keep It To Yourself: Cold and flu spreads through coughing and sneezing. In addition, avoid sharing food and drinks to prevent the spread. Wash your hands before eating and cover your mouth when coughing.

You may not be able to avoid getting sick, but knowing how to take care of yourself can help you and other around you from these illnesses. Check out the video below about the symptoms of the flu.
